Printing sizes explained

Unlike photographic images, that requires high resolutions to fully display details, art can be printed at lower resolutions without compromising detail. Printing on canvas can also be done at much lower resolutions, than when printing on high quality gloss paper.

Please note from the following that the term ‘ppi’ refers to pixels per inch.

  • Recommended printing resolution for canvas is 150ppi (pixels per inch) to 200ppi, with good quality results still possible at 100ppi.
  • Recommended printing resolution for photographic paper consisting of high quality gloss print paper is 300ppi.

The following example provides a practical understanding of how resolution in ppi (pixels per inch) works.

When using a resolution of 150ppi (pixels per inch)…

  • we know 1 inch = 25mm
  • so, 150ppi divided by 25mm = 6 pixels per mm

This means that at 150ppi the printed detail across a 1mm width can at maximum contain 6 pixels with varying colours. When thinking practically about it, that detail sounds pretty good, for canvas printing for example.

So how does this help me know what size paper or canvas I can print my digital image on?

In the following example we’ll assume the physical size of your digital image is 6000 pixels x 6000 pixels. At this size;

  • when using a resolution of 100ppi you can print to a paper or canvas size of 1500mm x 1500mm. (6000 pixels divided by 4 pixels per mm)
  • when using a resolution of 150ppi you can print to a paper or canvas size of 1000mm x 1000mm. (6000 pixels divided by 6 pixels per mm)
  • when using a resolution of 200ppi you can print to a paper or canvas size of 750mm x 750mm. (6000 pixels divided by 8 pixels per mm)
  • when using a resolution of 300ppi you can print to a paper or canvas size of 500mm x 500mm. (6000 pixels divided by 12 pixels per mm)
